Nayya’s technology is designed to deliver customized guidance on selecting and optimizing healthcare plans, using employee-provided information to create tailored recommendations. However, internal correspondence and staff discussions indicate that some employees have voiced confusion and concern about why opting out of this data-sharing process means being entirely excluded from participation in Google’s health plan.
Nayya’s system functions by enabling each employee to input details regarding their health conditions, daily habits, and lifestyle preferences. The platform then utilizes this information to suggest benefit packages that could better suit individual needs. According to internal resources available to employees, Nayya performs what Google terms “core health plan operational functions” to enhance the efficiency with which participants use their health benefits. Consequently, the documentation explains that complete withdrawal from third-party data sharing is not possible for those remaining in Alphabet’s corporate health plan, since such data exchanges are allowed within parameters established by HIPAA regulations. Employees wishing to withdraw their consent must formally disenroll from Alphabet’s benefit offerings either during the annual Open Enrollment period or upon triggering a significant Family Status Change.
When questioned about these requirements, Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini provided additional clarification. She stated that Nayya only receives standard, non-sensitive information—such as demographic data—when an employee chooses to engage with the tool. Any further data that the AI system accesses must be voluntarily submitted by the employee through the program itself. Mencini further emphasized that the tool underwent extensive internal security and privacy assessments before being launched, portraying its purpose as a means of simplifying employees’ navigation through an increasingly complex spectrum of healthcare options. Despite these assurances, concerns among employees have intensified. On Google’s internal Q&A platform, numerous users have posted pointed questions challenging the logic and ethics of linking access to health insurance with mandatory data sharing. Some posts expressed frustration at the perceived lack of a genuine opt-out mechanism for safeguarding sensitive medical information. Others went further, characterizing the practice as coercive and ethically problematic. One internally circulated message bluntly described the situation as a “very dark pattern,” arguing that meaningful consent cannot exist when declining data sharing results in loss of fundamental benefits.

There, employees accused the company of conflating optional AI-driven optimization with a mandatory prerequisite for healthcare participation. A spokesperson for Nayya responded by reiterating the company’s compliance and data protection commitments. They noted that Nayya’s platform is designed to help employees who choose to engage track their remaining deductible balances and receive recommendations tailored to their personal coverage needs. They also indicated that before Google integrated Nayya’s solution, it underwent a standard review process evaluating privacy and cybersecurity safeguards. An internal Google FAQ confirms that Nayya is contractually bound to protect any collected health data according to HIPAA requirements and explicitly prohibits the sharing, selling, or disclosure of personally identifiable information obtained from employees.
The controversy arises within a broader industry trend: major technology companies—including Meta, Microsoft, and others—are increasingly embedding artificial intelligence tools into their internal operations. Google, in particular, has been aggressively promoting AI utilization across different divisions to improve productivity, streamline processes, and ostensibly enhance employee support services. Other corporations, such as Salesforce and Walmart, have adopted similar AI-powered benefits platforms like Included Health to offer recommendation-based healthcare management for their teams.
This latest dispute highlights the evolving tension between innovation and privacy in modern corporate environments. While employers frame AI tools as mechanisms for empowerment and efficiency, many employees see them as introducing new forms of digital surveillance into domains as personal as healthcare. For now, Google’s stance remains that Nayya’s involvement enhances the benefits experience without compromising data security, but staff reactions suggest that questions about transparency, informed consent, and the boundaries of acceptable corporate data use remain far from resolved.
