For seven consecutive months, extending through September, ChatGPT has maintained its position as the single most downloaded mobile application across all major app marketplaces, including both the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. This extraordinary streak highlights not only the sustained popularity of OpenAI’s flagship product but also the accelerating public enthusiasm for artificial intelligence tools in everyday life.
According to detailed analytics compiled by Appfigures, a leading platform for mobile app intelligence and performance tracking, the ChatGPT application has been installed an astounding 411 million times over the course of this year alone. This figure represents a global scale of adoption that few other digital products have ever achieved, and it underscores the rapidly expanding role generative AI now plays in communication, education, and creative problem-solving.
OpenAI’s platform currently supports approximately 800 million active users every week, reflecting an immense global community that interacts with the technology continuously. Collectively, these users generate more than 2.5 billion individual queries each day—a figure that translates to roughly 29,000 messages being processed every single second. Such activity demonstrates not only the system’s scalability but also the profound extent to which individuals and organizations alike have integrated AI-driven conversation tools into their daily routines.
From March through September of this year, ChatGPT consistently outperformed every other AI-related mobile application in total downloads. The cumulative total, estimated at 410.8 million, dramatically exceeds that of its nearest competitors. Data shared with Business Insider shows that Google’s Gemini app ranked second with approximately 131.1 million downloads worldwide. Following further behind were DeepSeek with 79.2 million, Grok with 46.6 million, Perplexity with 43.1 million, and Meta AI with 16.9 million. The disparity between those numbers and ChatGPT’s figures offers a clear illustration of the scale of OpenAI’s dominance within the expanding AI ecosystem.
While these statistics might seem almost unbelievable, they align perfectly with the rapid speed and intensity of ChatGPT’s global adoption since its public introduction. When OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, addressed audiences at the company’s DevDay conference on Monday, he revealed that the platform had already reached 800 million active weekly participants—accounting for more than ten percent of the world’s entire population, according to research jointly conducted by scholars from Harvard University, Duke University, and OpenAI itself.
The research also noted that as of July, ChatGPT was processing over 2.5 billion messages per day. This translates not only into vast computational demand but also into an extraordinary level of human–AI interaction occurring in real-time around the world. The magnitude of these exchanges illustrates the transformation underway in how knowledge is accessed, how creativity unfolds, and how communication between people and technology continues to evolve across linguistic, cultural, and professional boundaries.
In essence, the data offers a vivid snapshot of a digital phenomenon that is reshaping the modern technological landscape, demonstrating how quickly artificial intelligence has transitioned from experimental novelty to an indispensable global utility.
