Its intention is neither to produce cars nor to manage fleets, but rather to engineer a highly sophisticated Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that it can then license to established automakers across the globe.

In essence, Wayve envisions a flexible, modular version of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system — software that could be seamlessly installed in vehicles manufactured by any company, regardless of their existing hardware. When I had the opportunity to test a demonstration of Wayve’s ADAS prototype, powered by its AV2.0 artificial intelligence driving platform, the experience took place in San Francisco, where I spent nearly an hour traveling through city streets in a Ford Mustang Mach-E. This vehicle had been carefully modified with an array of five cameras, a radar unit, and Wayve’s proprietary AI system integrated into its core. Specifically, I began to wonder how much Tesla’s self-proclaimed advantages — including its complete vertical integration of software and the immense repository of billions of miles of driving data — truly matter in developing a competent assisted-driving platform. Could a newcomer like Wayve realistically close the gap, and if so, how long might it take? Furthermore, if Wayve achieves parity in technical capability, would Tesla be able to maintain its dominance in the ADAS market if it remains primarily focused on keeping its software proprietary rather than licensing it? I experienced Wayve’s AV2.0 only briefly, under supervision, whereas Tesla’s customers can already purchase vehicles equipped with Full Self-Driving capabilities today. Tesla has even begun pilot robotaxi operations in Austin, Texas, where a safety observer sits in the passenger seat rather than behind the wheel. Meanwhile, Wayve has announced its intention to begin fully autonomous trials with Uber in London by the spring of 2026. Co-founded by Alex Kendall, Wayve emerged at a time when Alphabet’s Waymo had already spent years refining its robotaxi vision, and Tesla’s early Autopilot system — a simplified precursor to today’s FSD (Supervised) — had just begun reshaping public expectations.

Tesla frequently cites the immense scale of its data advantage, claiming over six billion miles of real-world driving data collected from its global fleet. Wayve, operating on a smaller scale, aggregates its information from multiple channels, including its own test fleet, data shared by OEM partners, and extensive simulated driving environments. Intriguingly, the company reported that its AI driver, initially trained for the UK’s right-hand driving configuration, adapted to U.S. conditions after only 500 hours of U.S.-specific training data — a testament to the flexibility of its learning algorithms. In April, Wayve formed a partnership with Nissan, marking a major step toward integrating its assisted-driving technology into mass-produced consumer vehicles.

Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, has also stated publicly that discussions are underway to license Tesla’s FSD system to other automakers. This suggests that both companies may eventually vie for dominance in what could become a lucrative software licensing arena for autonomous driving solutions.

From the passenger’s perspective, however, the contrast between Tesla’s FSD and Wayve’s AV2.0 is subtler than some might expect. During my test ride, there was little to indicate an enormous experiential gulf between them in terms of responsiveness, smoothness, or situational awareness. In the long run, the true differentiator may not simply be who reaches full autonomy first, but rather which company most effectively balances safety, scalability, and licensing flexibility — the three pillars that will likely define the future of assisted driving technologies around the world.
