Although many people associate the Emmy Awards solely with the star-studded Primetime ceremony broadcast on television each fall, the truth is far more complex. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences actually recognizes excellence in an astonishingly wide range of categories—so many, in fact, that there are literally hundreds of specific awards, resulting in thousands of recipients over time. These honors extend well beyond the familiar Primetime broadcast, which typically highlights only 26 carefully chosen categories in its televised show. In reality, entire additional ceremonies—such as the Daytime Emmys, Sports Emmys, News & Documentary Emmys, Children’s and Family Emmys, Creative Arts Emmys, and even specialized Primetime Engineering Awards—honor achievements in areas that may never be seen by the general viewing public. As a consequence, the title of “Emmy Award–winning” is one that extends far beyond the actors and actresses normally associated with television stardom. Musicians, filmmakers, politicians, and even culinary experts have found themselves unexpectedly holding Emmy statuettes for creative projects that reach into the world of television programming in unconventional ways.

This breadth of categories makes it possible for well-known public figures—often more famous for their work outside of television—to be recognized within this medium. The Emmy landscape is so expansive that names as diverse as Taylor Swift, Barack Obama, and Jay-Z can be found alongside Hollywood mainstays like Tom Hanks and Brad Pitt. While some awards are granted for producing high-profile, prestige dramas or limited series, others acknowledge contributions in music, narration, choreography, or even innovative technological formats. The result is a fascinating tapestry of recognition that weaves together talents from across industries, some of whom may surprise the public when revealed as Emmy winners.

Consider Taylor Swift, for example. Known globally as one of the most successful recording artists of her generation, Swift nevertheless has an Emmy to her name—not for songwriting or live performance but for an innovative foray into interactive media. In 2015, she received a Creative Arts Emmy Award for her project “AMEX Unstaged: Taylor Swift Experience,” an ambitious app that offered fans a fully immersive 360-degree exploration of her “Blank Space” music video. By integrating cutting-edge virtual reality technology, the project transformed a traditional pop video into an interactive narrative space, a bold experiment that demonstrated the Academy’s interest in rewarding not only traditional television but also related innovations in digital storytelling.

Brad Pitt, better known to the masses for his celebrated acting career and eventual Academy Award win as a producer of “12 Years a Slave,” has also captured Emmy recognition. His production company, Plan B Entertainment, has long invested in high-quality television adaptations, and in 2014, Pitt’s work with Ryan Murphy on HBO’s version of Larry Kramer’s renowned play “The Normal Heart” earned the award for Outstanding Television Movie. This cemented his reputation as a top-tier producer in addition to actor. Pitt has even continued to gather nominations in recent years, including a pending 2025 nod for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series as a producer of Netflix’s “Adolescence.”

Jay-Z, the legendary hip-hop artist and business mogul, has likewise surprised many with multiple Emmy achievements. He secured a Primetime Emmy in 2022 for his role in producing the Super Bowl LVI halftime performance, recognized in the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category. The following year, he earned another Primetime Emmy, this time for directing the Rihanna-led halftime show at Super Bowl LVII, sharing the honor with director Hamish Hamilton. Not limited to Primetime categories, Jay-Z had earlier claimed a Sports Emmy in 2011 for his contribution to music composition and lyrics in his electrifying rendition of “Run This Town,” performed as part of the broadcast leading into Super Bowl XLIV.

Meanwhile, Tom Hanks, the epitome of a Hollywood leading man, has built an equally distinguished reputation as a producer of serious, historically grounded television miniseries. Ever since his 1998 Emmy win for “From the Earth to the Moon,” Hanks has collected multiple additional awards for acclaimed series such as “Band of Brothers,” “John Adams,” “The Pacific,” “Game Change,” and “Olive Kitteridge.” Interestingly, despite his long history in both film and television, Hanks has only been nominated once for an on-screen performance in the television medium, as a guest actor in “Saturday Night Live” in 2017.

Another unexpected Emmy winner is former President Barack Obama, who has the distinction of being the first United States president to win a competitive Emmy. Recognized not for political achievements but for his measured and expressive narration, Obama has been awarded the Outstanding Narrator title multiple times in recent years—in 2022, 2023, and again in 2025—for lending his voice to a series of Netflix documentary programs. This achievement underscores how far-reaching Emmy recognition can be, honoring not just traditional entertainment performances but also contributions to documentary and educational programming. Prior to his victories, it is worth noting that Donald Trump had also been an Emmy nominee twice as a producer of “The Apprentice,” though he never won.

The world of culinary television has also been acknowledged, with famed British chef Jamie Oliver taking home an Emmy Award in 2010. His program “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution,” praised for both its combination of entertainment and education, won in the Reality Show category. Oliver, best known for his simple yet inventive approach to cooking, became emblematic of the ways in which television can be used to influence public habits and promote healthy lifestyles.

Cher, the musical icon, provides yet another intriguing example. She had been nominated multiple times in the 1970s for “The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour” but did not manage a win during that period. Decades later, however, she finally secured victory with her television event “Cher: The Farewell Tour” in 2003, which triumphed in the category of Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Special. Two of her other televised concert films have also received Emmy nominations, solidifying her status as a nearly complete EGOT winner, with only a Tony Award missing from her collection.

Comic actor Zach Galifianakis, beloved for his eccentric humor, has also gathered Emmy recognition—though from an exceptionally obscure category. His quirky online interview series “Between Two Ferns” earned him two awards in 2014 and 2015 for Outstanding Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program. Beyond these niche accolades, his acting talents have also been celebrated, bringing him nominations for roles on both “Saturday Night Live” and the comedy-drama series “Baskets.”

Choreographer and director Kenny Ortega, famous for shaping beloved Disney Channel musicals such as “High School Musical” and classic films like “Hocus Pocus,” secured Emmys for his expertise in dance direction. In 2006, “High School Musical” itself became a double-winner, claiming awards both for choreography and for best children’s program. Ortega’s choreography recognition added to his earlier Emmy achievements for directing and choreographing the dazzling opening ceremony of the 2002 Olympic Games.

Veteran entertainer Billy Crystal, long celebrated as a comic and awards show host, has an impressive six Emmys under his belt. Interestingly, several of these honors come from his work hosting or writing for ceremonies best known as competitors to the Emmys themselves, including the Grammy Awards and the Oscars. Since both are televised live-event programs, they qualified for Emmy categories recognizing variety specials and writing. Crystal was awarded for hosting the 1989 Grammys as well as the 1991 and 1998 Academy Awards, in addition to winning for writing the 1991 and 1992 Oscars telecasts.

In more recent years, Lizzo—a powerhouse in the music industry with multiple Grammys—also gained Emmy recognition with her Amazon Prime series “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.” This reality competition, which followed a group of dancers auditioning for spots on Lizzo’s tour, took home the trophy for Outstanding Reality Competition Program in 2022. Beyond simply being its host and central figure, Lizzo also shared in the producing credit, further highlighting her versatility and investment in showcasing diverse talent.

Finally, Martin Scorsese, one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in cinematic history, stands as yet another crossover Emmy success story. His first Emmy win came in 2011 for directing the pilot episode of HBO’s lavish period drama “Boardwalk Empire.” In 2012, he secured two additional honors for his work on the documentary “George Harrison: Living in the Material World,” which he both produced and directed. Over the years, Scorsese has amassed 13 nominations across multiple categories. Most recently, in 2025, he was even recognized as a performer, nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for portraying himself in Apple TV+’s “The Studio.” Though he lost to Bryan Cranston, the nomination illustrated how seamlessly his influence has crossed into television.

Taken together, these stories reveal just how varied and extensive Emmy recognition can be. What many assume to be a celebration of only actors and writers on major television dramas is in fact a sprawling acknowledgment of creative achievement across nearly every imaginable medium related to television. From politicians lending their voices to documentaries, to pop icons experimenting with new digital technologies, to culinary figures shaping societal conversations through reality series, the Emmy Awards capture the vast expanse of modern entertainment. And because of this, one might find themselves quite astonished to learn that some of the most recognizable names in global culture are also proud Emmy winners.
