Consider this question: what amount would you be willing to pay for a single, truly revolutionary artificial intelligence—an AI so capable and refined that it earns the coveted title of the ultimate ‘killer app’? Hedge fund leader Sam Leffell has strong opinions on the matter. During my research into ChatGPT’s predictive and analytical abilities, I had the opportunity to get acquainted with Sam, who relies on this advanced AI tool extensively—both as an indispensable professional instrument and as a personal assistant that streamlines daily tasks.
Earlier in the year, Sam experimented with Google’s Gemini, a competing generative AI platform. Among Gemini’s many tools, he developed a particular fascination with a Gmail-integrated function known as ‘Polish.’ This ingenious feature, powered by artificial intelligence, automatically refines and enhances any email draft containing at least twelve words. Users can trigger it effortlessly—by pressing Alt+H on Windows or Option+H on macOS—and within seconds, Gemini activates, transforming the text into a smoother, more effective version. (To clarify, it is ‘polish’ as in to make something shine, not the Polish language.)
According to Sam, this functionality stood out as the most valuable aspect of Gemini’s offerings. He noted that crafting email correspondence now consumes only a small fraction of the time it once did. While he still takes the time to make fine-tuned stylistic adjustments—a reflection of his meticulous nature—the overall writing process has become dramatically faster and produces noticeably superior results. This small yet powerful button, in his view, encapsulates the potential of applied AI efficiency in everyday work.
However, there was an unexpected twist. After several weeks of use, Sam decided to cancel his paid Gemini subscription. His decision was based purely on personal observation: he felt that, overall, the Gemini platform did not quite match the quality, responsiveness, or versatility of ChatGPT. Yet shortly after discontinuing his subscription, he discovered that the beloved Polish email feature had vanished from his Gmail interface without warning—a disappearance he found intolerable.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Sam admitted. “I’ve now found myself paying Google a monthly fee just to restore that small but essential button—the one that lets me polish every email to perfection. That’s how indispensable it has become to my daily communication.” The first paid subscription tier for Gemini begins at twenty dollars per month, a significant price when one considers that, for Sam, this single AI-powered enhancement was practically the only reason for subscribing in the first place.
